Sumerian Civilization

 Sumerian civilization is located in modern day Iraq. In southern Mesopotamia. It is one of the oldest civilizations.

It was located in the region of the Fertile Crescent between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.


The early people known as Ubaid had achiements in the fields of farming , raising cattle, weaving textiles , carpentary , pottery etc.

Villages were built around ubaid communities . The Sumerians took control of the area by 3000 BC.

Around 2800 BC the city had population of  40000 to 80000 living between its six miles of defensive walls. It was on of the largest city of the world. Each city is Sumer was surrounded by a wall with villages settled just outside.

 The Sumerian civilization was know for its elaborate structure and architecture. Building are known for their arched doorways. sculptures were used to decorate the temples. Due to shortage of stones the Sumerians used metal casting in there work. Ziggurats began to appear in 2200 BC.  These were pyramid like stepped temples which were either square or rectangular.  They did not have inner chambers and were 170 feet high.  The hanging gardens of Babylon are the famous ziggurats. Sumerian language was the oldest language recorded. It was a written language in cuneiform for more than 2000 years. Most Sumerians were farmers. Some were craftsman , teachers, traders, fisherman and hunters. Kids went to Schools and women kept their homes clean.

Sumerian civilization 3

 The ancient Sumerians were first creators of a real organized government .  Their type of government was monarchy .  There were 12 city states .each one had a different king and styles of life.  The king had advisors to help him with his ruling.  The kings were called Lugals .  The kings were responsible for the construction of the buildings, temples maintaining city borders and irrigation systems. Though the kings had a lot of power they could not act as dictators. The priests were the largest owners of the land and were very powerful as they knew the will of the gods.  The class structure of Sumerians was : King , high priests , officials Lesser priests,scribes,merchants , artisans  Peasant farmers  Slaves.
